Town of Salem, NH

The Bridge Street Bridge Replacement Project involves the complete removal and reconstruction of the existing bridge to enhance safety, structural integrity, and long-term reliability of this essential roadway.

The Town held a preconstruction meeting on December 9, 2025, and the contractor has begun mobilizing on-site in preparation for construction activities.

Road Closure & Traffic Impacts

Starting January 12, 2026, Bridge Street will be closed to through traffic between Wheeler Avenue and Main Street.

Traffic will still be able to access Bridge Street up to Douglas Drive. Beyond Wheeler Avenue, Bridge Street will become a dead-end roadway.

The work zone will be fully closed to through traffic for the entire duration of the project, which is expected to last approximately 10 months, continuing into late fall 2026.

Access During Construction

During the upcoming construction period, through traffic will be restricted; however, local traffic will still have access to properties within the affected area. Emergency access will be maintained at all times. To help drivers navigate around the construction zone, clearly marked detour routes will be provided. Additionally, message boards and signage will be installed in advance of the shutdown to alert drivers and offer detour information.

Important Note:
Due to security, ownership, and capacity limitations, the access road from Stanwood Road to Hitching Post Lane will remain closed and will not be available as a detour route. A detour map is available to assist residents and visitors in planning alternate travel routes.
