The Municipal Services Department of the Town of Salem, specifically the Public Works Division, will begin its annual roadside litter cleanup program during the week of April 6. This ongoing initiative helps keep Salem’s roadways, neighborhoods, and public spaces clean, while also encouraging community involvement in maintaining the town’s appearance.

Each year, the Public Works Division collaborates with residents, community groups, local organizations, and businesses that volunteer their time to collect litter along Salem’s roadways. This program not only enhances the town’s visual appeal but also helps prevent trash from entering local waterways and natural areas.

Community participation is crucial for the success of this program. The town is currently seeking volunteers to assist with roadside litter pickup. Individuals, families, civic groups, youth organizations, and local businesses are all encouraged to participate. The town will provide blue collection bags and help coordinate cleanup locations by assigning specific areas to volunteers.

Residents interested in joining this year’s cleanup effort can contact Lisa Perry at the Municipal Services Department for more information or to sign up. Lisa can be reached at 603-890-2150 or via email at lperry@salemnh.gov.

Salem has achieved significant success through the Litter-Free New Hampshire Program over the years. The town has collected over 19 tons of roadside litter in the past six years, which is about 38,000 pounds of debris removed from local roads. On average, this amounts to more than three tons of litter collected each year.

Salem residents and volunteers show a strong commitment to maintaining a clean and welcoming community. Initiatives like this one demonstrate how simple actions, such as picking up litter along roadways, can have a significant positive impact on both the environment and the overall quality of life in the town.

With the ongoing support of volunteers and community partners, Salem looks forward to another successful cleanup season and appreciates the dedication of everyone who helps keep the town litter-free.
