For nearly four decades, the Salem Fire Department has proudly carried on a tradition built on service, teamwork, and a commitment to helping others. What began in 1988 as a challenge among a small group of Salem firefighters has grown into the annual TransNH Bike Ride, an event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
The TransNH Bike Ride began when nine firefighters — eight riders and one support member — along with two citizen volunteers, set out with a goal of riding from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts state line in Salem, New Hampshire. Inspired by the success of their annual “Fill the Boot” fundraising efforts, these firefighters wanted to take their commitment one step further by going the extra distance to support individuals and families affected by muscular dystrophy.
That first ride tested the determination of everyone involved. Battling torrential rain, hail, and strong winds, the riders pushed through physical and mental challenges while keeping their focus on the mission. The experience reinforced a powerful message: the challenges faced during the ride were small compared to the daily challenges faced by those living with muscular dystrophy.

Since that first journey, the TransNH Bike Ride has grown into a statewide and national community of firefighters, citizens, volunteers, and individuals affected by muscular dystrophy. Each year, riders return for the same reasons that motivated the original group — to support the cause, build awareness, and make a difference.
This year, multiple members of the Salem Fire Department once again completed the challenging three-day bicycle ride across New Hampshire, proudly representing the department and continuing the legacy started by those before them.

The ride holds a special place in Salem Fire history. Over the past 39 years, many current and retired members of the department have participated, creating a tradition that has been passed down through generations of firefighters. It is a powerful example of how the dedication and compassion of past members continues to inspire those serving today.
During this year’s event, Fire Chief Craig Lemire was presented with a framed T-shirt from the very first TransNH Bike Ride, recognizing Salem Fire’s role in the history of the event and honoring the members who started this incredible tradition nearly four decades ago.

“Salem Fire has always been built on tradition, service, and a commitment to helping others,” said Chief Lemire. “It is amazing to see something that our retirees started 39 years ago continue today, with new members embracing the same mission and carrying this tradition forward.”
The continued participation of Salem firefighters reflects the department’s commitment not only to protecting the community, but also to supporting causes that make a meaningful difference beyond the firehouse. The TransNH Bike Ride represents the very best of the fire service — teamwork, perseverance, compassion, and a willingness to help others.

Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the TransNH Bike Ride, celebrating the vision of the firefighters who started the event and the thousands of miles, hours of dedication, and countless acts of generosity that have kept the mission alive.
The Salem Fire Department is proud to continue this tradition and looks forward to celebrating 40 years of riding, fundraising, and supporting the mission of MDA.
