The Town of Salem proudly celebrated the grand opening of the Salem Depot Village Veterans Plaza with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 5, 2025. Community members, local officials, and veterans gathered to honor those who have served and to mark the completion of this significant new addition to Depot Village.

Army Veteran Pat Hargreaves served as the guest speaker and spoke movingly about Ed DeClercq, a former Salem State Representative and veteran, whose vision and dedication inspired the creation of the Plaza. Hargreaves shared how DeClercq’s passion for honoring local veterans helped to initiate this project, which has now come to life in the heart of the community.

The idea for the Veterans Plaza was first presented at the Town Council meeting on August 5, 2024, as a major community initiative to recognize and honor Salem’s veterans. The design features three flagpoles, dedications to veterans and military branches, and landscaping that complements the Depot Train Station and nearby Tuscan Village plazas, creating a cohesive and inviting public space for reflection and pride.

Generous community support made this project possible. On October 7, 2024, the Town Council accepted a $50,000 donation from the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63. Additional contributions soon followed:

  • American Legion Post 63: $30,000
  • Amvets Post 2: $30,000

By November 4, 2024, the total amount raised reached $110,000. On December 2, 2024, the American Legion Post 63 contributed another $30,000 donation, bringing Phase I funding to $140,000.

The Municipal Services Department (Public Works) further supported the project with in-kind labor and materials, ensuring that every donated dollar went directly toward creating a lasting and meaningful tribute.

The Salem Depot Village Veterans Plaza is now open and serves as a significant symbol of gratitude, where residents and visitors can gather to honor those who have served our country and reflect on Salem’s community spirit. This plaza stands as a lasting tribute to the courageous men and women who have defended our freedoms. It embodies the Town’s deep appreciation and our commitment to preserving the memory of those who have made sacrifices for our country. We invite everyone to stop by and experience this important addition to our community. Public parking is available nearby in the municipal lot, making it easy for all who wish to visit.
