After 24 years of dedicated and distinguished service to the Town of Salem, Deputy Chief Shane Smith has retired from the Salem Police Department.

Deputy Chief Smith’s retirement marks the end of more than 60 years of continuous service to the Salem Police Department by members of the Smith family. His father, his brother, and Deputy Chief Smith all proudly served the Town of Salem, leaving behind a lasting legacy of commitment to public safety and community service.

Former Salem Police Deputy Chief Shane Smith, who recently retired after 24 years of service to the Town of Salem.

Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Smith was known for his integrity, steady leadership, unwavering support for the department, and deep commitment to the Town and its residents. He was also known for his sense of humor, his ability to bring comedic relief when it was needed most, and his never-ending stories that became a familiar part of life within the department.

Lovingly nicknamed “The Prince of Salem,” Deputy Chief Smith seemed to know someone on almost every call, motor vehicle stop, or community interaction, whether through his own service or through the longstanding reputation of the Smith family. His connection to the community extended far beyond the walls of the Police Department, and he will be missed by many throughout Salem.

While the Salem Police Department and the Town of Salem will miss Deputy Chief Smith’s leadership, support, and presence, we wish him nothing but the best as he begins his next chapter as Chief of Police for the Town of Belmont, Massachusetts.

Congratulations, Chief Smith, and thank you for your many years of service to the Town of Salem.
