Merrimack Valley Transit, also known as MeVa, launched its new Route 28 bus service on April 6, 2026, providing a new regional connection between Lawrence, Methuen, and Salem.
The new route connects McGovern Station in Lawrence to Methuen and continues into Salem, with stops near the Aldi and Target plazas, Mass General Brigham, and Tuscan Village. The service is fare free, allowing Salem residents and visitors to ride at no cost.
Route 28 is part of a pilot program launched by MeVa and funded through the MassDOT Connectivity Grant program. The goal of the program is to improve transportation access, strengthen regional connections, and provide additional mobility options for residents, workers, and visitors.
During its first month of service, Route 28 saw strong early ridership, with more than 3,231 riders using the route in April. The early response is especially notable because new transit routes often take time to build consistent ridership, particularly when operating with limited daily trips and longer headways.
Feedback from riders has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the expanded transportation access between Lawrence, Methuen, and Salem. Transit officials have noted that the primary concern shared so far has been the desire for more frequent service, which points to strong community interest and continued growth potential for the route.
The strong first month of ridership highlights the importance of regional transit connections and the need for continued investment in accessible transportation options.
