Hello Salem Voters,

As we approach the September 10th Primary Date, here are some important reminders from the Town Moderator. This is a primary election, which means that there are two separate elections, one for each party, to determine each party’s nominees for the November general election.

1)      Voter Identification: To ensure the smoothest possible experience, please make sure that if you have a government issued ID card out you have it out and ready when approaching the polling check in. If you do not have one then please ask an election official as to how to proceed with voting.

2)      Check in at ANY LINE: Thanks to our new electronic poll book, you may check in at any table, regardless of your last name.

3)      Undeclared Voters: Only undeclared voters may choose which party’s primary they wish to vote in. If you are registered to vote in either party, you may only vote in that party’s primary. If you wish to reclaim undeclared status, you must do so before leaving the polls. Otherwise, you will be registered as the party you choose on Election Day.

4)      Public Announcement of Name, Address and Party Affiliation: According to NH RSA 659:13 and 659:14, ballot clerks must repeat your name, address and party affiliation back to you, out loud, “in a manner that allows any person appointed as a challenger to hear the announcement.” This is a legal requirement that ballot clerks must follow.

5)      You will receive a Voter Check-In Slip at the check in table. This Check-in Slip must be presented and turned in at the ballot table to receive your ballot. Check in slips must be collected and filed along with other election records.

We hope these reminders are helpful, and we hope to see all citizens of Salem exercising their rights on September 10th.
