The Salem Fire Department placed a new fire engine into service on Monday, December 22, 2025, during a traditional pushing-in ceremony. This event celebrated a significant investment in public safety approved by voters through the 2023 Warrant Article.
Chief Lemire thanked the Town Manager, Town Council, Budget Committee, Capital Improvement Program Committee, and Salem voters for their continued support, noting the engine is expected to serve the community reliably for the next 20 years.
The department also recognized former Fire Chief Best for his leadership in advancing the project and the members of the Engine Committee, who dedicated many hours to developing specifications that meet Salem’s operational needs. Firefighters were acknowledged for their professionalism and commitment to protecting the community.
The pushing-in ceremony dates back to the late 1800s, when firefighters physically pushed horse-drawn engines back into the firehouse after a call. Today, the tradition symbolizes placing a new apparatus into service. The ceremony concluded with a blessing from Fire Chaplain Eric Redard before the engine was officially pushed into the firehouse and placed into service.
