On the morning of September 11, 2026, members of the Salem Fire and Police Departments gathered with the community to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and eight paramedics and EMTs.
Fire Chief Craig Lemire presided over the ceremony and reflected on the tragic events of that day and their lasting impact on our nation. Against a clear blue sky, with the flags moving gently in the breeze, Alexandra Kayo delivered a heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary, members of both departments read aloud the names of the fallen first responders, honoring their extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
A local resident who was in New York City on September 11 shared photographs documenting the devastation and aftermath. Members of the community gathered alongside Town officials and first responders to pay their respects and stand together in remembrance.
We also remember the survivors and first responders who continue to suffer—and those we have lost in the years since—from illnesses connected to that day.
Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
