“Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.”
— The Polar Express
As the holiday season approaches, it offers us a chance to pause and reflect—on the year behind us, the people around us, and the values that make our community strong. Beyond the gifts and gatherings, this season reminds us of something deeper: the importance of generosity, compassion, and connection. These are not only the spirit of the holidays—they’re also the spirit of Salem.
2025 has been a meaningful year for our Town. We celebrated Salem’s 275th anniversary, a milestone that honored our past and brought people together in ways that reflect the best of who we are. We broke ground on a new Police Station, completed the Salem Master Plan, and dedicated the beautiful new Veterans Plaza in the Depot, a place of reflection and gratitude for those who have served. These achievements speak to our shared investment in the future—and the strength of our community working together.
But often, it’s the smaller, quieter moments that define a town. A wave to a neighbor. A volunteer serving quietly behind the scenes. A family showing up to support a local event. These are the things that bring Salem to life. And this time of year, has a way of reminding us to look out for each other. It might be volunteering for an organization that is meaningful to you, dropping off a donation, or simply checking in on someone who could use a little extra kindness. These small acts—often the ones no one sees—can mean the most. The holidays remind us that what truly matters isn’t what we give or receive, but the connections we share and the care we show one another.
I’m incredibly proud of all we’ve accomplished in 2025—and I’m just as excited for what lies ahead. In 2026, we’ll continue building on this momentum, with projects that reflect your priorities and deepen our connection as a community. From launching our revised Local Government Academy to advancing the next phase of improvements in infrastructure and services, we remain committed to a Salem that is forward-thinking, inclusive, and strong.
So, from my family to yours, I wish you a holiday season filled with peace, joy, and rest—and a New Year full of health, happiness, and hope. Thank you for being part of what makes Salem such a special place to call home.
With warmest regards,
Joe Devine
