Former Wastewater Treatment Plant Remediation Update

Town of Salem, NH

The Town of Salem has continued critical environmental remediation work on the former Wastewater Treatment Plant parcel on 4 Sarl Drive with support from our environmental engineering consultant GeoInsight, Inc.

These efforts include ongoing groundwater management permit activities and thermal remediation of impacted soils. Monitoring and sampling of groundwater occurs in June and November of each year. Coordination with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) is ongoing to ensure that the conditions of the existing Groundwater Management Permit (GMP) are met.

The Town is using electrical resistance heating (ERH), which is an intensive environmental remediation method that uses the flow of alternating current electricity to heat soil and groundwater. ERH will evaporate volatile organic compound contaminants located in the soils. This ERH work was completed in 2023 by the TRS Group, a global leader in thermal remediation.

The only remining remediation item on the site is the removal of PCB contaminated soil, which will be removed in 2024.
